About Us
The Problem
The problem that exists is that;
Zambia has a total of 9.6 million women and girl’s majority
of whom fall in the 12-45-year age and have a menstrual cycle.
Notwithstanding, the challenge that comes about is that the affordability
and availability of sanitary pads is limited more so for 56 percent of women
and girls living in low-income.
Maize is the staple food in Zambia as millions as the country produces approx.
350,000 metric tonnes of it per annum. The cultivation of maize leaves stalk, leaves
and husks as by-products. Maize by-products are under-utilized as they are either
disposed, sold to livestock farmers or used as compost
Women and girls in low-income communities often have to skip school on days,
they have their period due to reasons such as high costs of sanitary pads which as
going to school may risk social stigma. Many cases have been reported that girls
often have to sit in the sand to ensure that they bleeding slows, however, they may
end up getting infected as a result of this method.
Our Solution
Our innovation is called Milisi Pads it is a sanitary pad that
is made from the maize fiber.
The innovation works through extraction of fiber from maize as
an absorbent layer as it is safer compared to tampons and other
sanitary napkin which are composed of super absorbent gel which
may cause diseases.
Our innovation is unique because its;
Affordable
Our sanitary napkins are accessible and affordable for women and girls in low income communities.
Bio-degradable
This means that that the product is recyclable as it is leverages corn fiber to create a sanitary pad which is highly absorbent.
Safe
Our product has better absorption than sanitary napkins on the market.
